The Three Seas

Saturday 18 April 2026, 6pm
Civic Theatre Upstairs Foyer,
Burns Way (off Tarcutta Street) Wagga Wagga

The Three Seas (AUS/IND) fuse Baul mysticism, Himalayan folk, rock, and spiritual jazz into a sound both ancient and new. Formed in Santiniketan, West Bengal, in 2009, the ensemble brings together Australian saxophonist Matt Keegan with West Bengali and Nepali virtuosos Raju Das Baul (vocals, khamak), Deo Ashis Mothey (dotora, esraj, murchunga), and Gaurab “Gaboo” Chatterjee (drums, dubki; Lakkhichhara, son of Moheener Ghoraguli founder Gautam Chattopadhyay), joined by Brendan Clark (bass) and Hilary Geddes (guitar).

Their music transcends genre—soaring Baul vocals and Himalayan chants meet baritone sax grooves and deep tribal percussion, weaving together folk instruments and contemporary textures. The result is immersive and uplifting, a hypnotic intercultural soundscape where ancient poetry, modern improvisation, and transcendent rhythm converge.

Over fifteen years, The Three Seas have released three albums—Haveli (2013), Fathers, Sons & Brothers (2017), and Afterlife (2022, Earshift)—and toured extensively across Asia, Australia, and the UK. Their forthcoming fourth album, Antaḥkaraṇa, recorded live at the legendary Real World Studios (UK) and produced by Sarathy Korwar (Leaf Label, Ninja Tune) and Dave Rodriguez (Godtet), marks a defining new chapter in their evolution.

“*****- An immersive festival highlight”- Jessica Nicholas, The Age
“*****- A rare sound of joy”- Debelina Sen, The Times of India

Presented in partnership with the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre.
This performance is included in the Festival Pass and the Saturday Pass.

Antaḥkaraṇa means “the inner instrument”; a bridge between thought and feeling, body and spirit. It signifies the field where mind, memory, ego, and intuition intersect: the unseen current connecting consciousness to the senses. It is the subtle mechanism through which the inner self experiences and interprets the external world. Music follows this same pathway, translating emotion and intuition into sound.

Approximately 70 minutes, no intermission. General admission.
